Other Plans of Commission which Met here.Discussion of an appropriation for the erection of a monument to General Samuel Wylie Crawford and for the dedication of the memorials to the three other Pennsylvania generals recently erected on the battlefield occupied a large portion of the .time of the members of the Pennsylvania-Gettysburg Monuments Commission who met here on Saturday. It is understood that the commission determined at their meeting to ask the next session of the legislature for money for these two purposes. It is likely that, if the money is granted, the dedication of the memorials to Generals Hays, Humphreys, and Geary will not take place until that to General Crawford is completed, and that then the four unveilings will all take place on the same day.General Crawford was in command of the division of Pennsylvania Reserves at the time of the battle and the commission regards as highly essential the erection of a suitable memorial here in his honor. An interesting matter discussed by the Pennsylvania commissioners here on Saturday was the location of the monument to General Hays. Captain David Shields—made a member of the commission after the present site had been unanimously chosen—now claims that the memorial should be placed closer to the woods. He was on General Hays’ staff and it is possible that he may take the matter before the Secretary of War in an effort to have the monument moved though, it is understood, others believe it should remain at its present location and that no such change will be accomplished. The Pennsylvania monument was carefully inspected by the commissioners during their stay here and they determined to replace the wooden gate at the stairway with a bronze gate of suitable design. The memorial is too handsome and massive, think the commissioners, to have it marred by anything so cheap and unsubstantial as a wooden barrier.
