Klopfenstein, a hardware merchant j from Leo, was struck by a T. lt;fc C. I. south bound express car at stop 6, just outside the Fort Wayne city 1 limits, shortly after 5 o’clock Thurs j day morning,and while the machine was badly damaged, Klopfenstein escaped without injury.It is understood Klopfenstein claimed that the motor man did not sound his gong or his whistle, but according to the motorman, when he noticed the approaching automobile be sounded his gong and whistle put on his air and finally reversed bis motors in an effort to avoid running into the aElt;to. The auto driver however, was said to seemingly pay no attention to the interurban, as he wore a pair of ear muffs that evidently hindered him from hearing the signals of the motorman.The car was struck and badly j damaged, but Mr. Klopfenstein escaped without personal injuries. It was a close call, however,and serves to call attention to the fact that precaution should be used always in crossiug railroad tracks.
