SPORTSThursday, Sept. 15, 2016Woodbridge gets going and tops Garden GroverBy BRENT SHAVERCONTRIBUTING WRITERWoodbridge High’s football team was bound to break into the win column, and the Warriors did it in abig way last Friday night atUniversity High.After dropping close decisions in the opening two weeks, Woodbridge defeated Garden Grove, 27-6, last Friday. Garden Grove was ranked No. 6 in the Sept. 6GIF Division 8 poll.“The kids played great, Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “This is what we want to do. We just try and get better even’ week. Woodbridge, which hadbeen rotating quarterbacks in its First two games, stuck to one on Friday night and it paid off.Senior Spencer Weston completed 18 of 26 passes for 208 yards and onetouchdown, Weston, whowas able to roll out and get out of the pocket for most of his throws, connected on his first nine passes.“1 knew I was the guy and I was definitely readv for this game,” Weston said.Wow is the right word,” Gibson said of Weston’s performance.“He had probably played a grand total of two quarters as a varsity quarterback.’’ Gibson said. “We simplified things and he did a lot of film work this weekto get ready. I am really pleased with what he did.” Weston’s main target was wide receiver Nate Le-doux, who hauled in 10 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.“Nate and I worked a lot in the offseason and after practice,” Weston said.“I just wanted to get the ball to him and Chance (Rainey) and let them makeplays.”“It was nice to see Nate have a breakout game as well, Gibson said. “That isMICHAEL FERNANDEZ, CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERWoodbrldge's Connor McBride, right, celebrates a touchdown with Will Serio during the first half Friday.doing for us.”Connor McBride gave the Warriors a nice balance on offense by rushing for 92 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.Woodbridge jumped on the Argonauts early, going 68 yards on 11 plays on their first drive for a score.Weston found McBridereally what he is capable of on a screen pass for 15 yardsto get the ball to the 8-yard line. Three plays later, McBride spun to his left into the end zone for the score.After Woodbridge’s defense forced Garden Grove to punt, the Warriors went down the field for another score.Weston made plays on his first two throws of thedrive, finding Ledoux for a 17-yard completion and then Ledoux again for 30-vard reception to the 2-yard line.McBride barreled in from 2 yards out two plays later to help give Woodbridge a 14-0 lead.Garden Grove scored on its third possession. TheArgonauts went on a nine-plav, 65-yard drive, which featured all runs.Joseph Camarillo scored on a 5-vard run.
