York County 7 eye top seasonBy ALLEtf LESSELS Staff WriterWATERVILLE - Members of the Chicago Seven made names for themselves in the late 1960s as antiestablishment dissidents. Members of the York County Seven would like to make names for themselves in the late 1970s. But the York County Seven wants to do it another way, on the football field at Colby College. The seven are former area high school standouts, now showcasing their talents for Colby under coach Dick McGee. And all are freshmen or sophomores, part of an extremely young team at Colby. Of 57 players on McGee’s roster, 26 are freshmen and 17 sophomores.Three former Thornton Academy players are expected to start when Colby squares off in a four-team, round-robin scrimmage Saturday with Maine Maritime, Bates and Bowdoin in Brunswick.Sophomores Frank Sears and Steve Fogg will start at quarterback and split end respectively. Freshman Harry Hadiaris is pegged for a starting role at defensive end.Four freshmen round out the York County Seven. Paul Belanger and Bruce Shain were on Sanford’s state finalist team last year, Joe Potvin played for Biddeford and John Harvey for Thornton Academy.Belanger is pushing Sears for the starting quarterback job. Sears is “an excellent passer’’ says McGee and has the edge because he played last year. In last year’s final game against Bowdoin, Sears set a school single game passing record, passing for 251 yards.McGee has other plans for Belanger should Sears win the quarterback battle. “If he doesn’t play quarterback, he’ll play as wide receiver,’’ said McGee in a telephone interview Wednesday. “He's an excellent, excellent athlete.’’Harvey backs up Fogg at split end, and also is a backup at tight end. Both Foggand Harvey are excellent receivers with good hands, according to McGee. Harvey was slowed down earlier in the season with a shoulder injury.Potvin, tackle, and Shain, center, are working on the second offensive line, but will see a lot of varsity action said McGee. They are freshman, both backing up seniors, we’ll give them as much action as we can so they can step in next year.Hadiaris missed his last two year’s of high school football. Expected to be TA’s starting quarterback, he broke a leg each year before the regular season started. The York County Seven players are part of the reason McGee looks to improve on last year’s 1-7 record. “We had a bad year, injuries hurt and we were very young. This year, I don’t think we’ll go to the Rose Bowl, but we should be vastly improved. If we can stay away from injuries, which especially hurt a small team, we should do much better.”Colby opens the regular season Sept. 24 at Middlebury (Vt.) College. On his York County crew, McGee said, “We’ve been very fortunate. We’ve had excellent experience in the past with people from these schools. You might say York County has been good to Colby. You might say that’s an understatement.Another 1976 Thornton Academy graduate is making a name for himself in college football. Fred Pendleton, an all conference defensive halfback while at TA, is the starting fullback on the varsity at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.Pendleton caught a couple of passes in last Saturday’s 10-6 loss to Massachusetts Maritime, said his father He was last year's team Rookie of the Year, averaging 3.7 yards per carry for the junior varsity and playing second string on the varsity Pendleton will be back in action Saturday when the Coast Guard takes on RPI in Troy.
