VOLUME 19, NUMBER 36September 15/ 19725 Appointed to Duke BoardFour health science professionals and a New York businessman have accepted appointments to the Medical Center’s Board of Visitors.Henry E. Rauch of Greensboro, chairman of the 17-member board, said the new members are:— Edward H. Benenson of New York City, president of the Benenson Management Co., Inc.—Dr. John A. D. Cooper, president of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in Washington.— Dr. Loretta C. Ford, professor of nursing at the University of Colorado.— Dr. Andrew G. Morrow, chief of the Clinic of Surgery at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Md.— Mrs. Anne R. Somers, associate professor of community medicine at Rutgers University and research associate in industrial relations at Princeton.The Board of Visitors was established to provide Duke with outside ideas and guidance in the operation of on-going programs and in the development oflong-range goals in education and patient care. Membership includes representatives of private business, philanthropy, and other academic disciplines in addition to medicine and nursing.The board meets annually at Duke in the spring to hear reports from representatives of the Medical Center. It then submits an assessment and recommendations to the administration.Mr. Benenson is president of 10 corporations and chairman of five others. He is a member of the Real Estate Board of New York, the Commerce and Industry Association of New York and the National Board of Realtors.Dr. Cooper was associate dean of faculties at Northwestern University before becoming president of AAMC in 1969. He is a graduate of New Mexico State University and holds M.B., M.D.SHE KNEW BRIAN BEST-This is Mrs. Joy Piccolo, widow of Brian Piccolo, who spoke just before a benefit showing of the movie, ’’Brian’s Song,” at the Yorktowne Theatre Aug. 29. The benefit launched Duke’s drive for funds to match a federal grant that will help the Medical Center establish a major Comprehensive Cancer Center. Next week’s issue of1 ’’Intercom” will contain a page of pictures ta]lt;en the night of the benefit.and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern.Dr. Ford, a registered nurse, received bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in education degrees at the University of Colorado, where she has been a professor of nursing since 1965.Dr. Morrow earned his M.D. degree at Johns Hopkins University, where he continues on the faculty as associate professor of surgery. He has held his position at the National Heart Institute since 1953.Mrs. Somers, a graduate of Vassar College with advanced work in economics at the University of North Carolina, has been engaged for the past 15 years in studies of medical and hospital care and social insurance programs.(continued on page 3)
