WASHINGTON, D. C. — A spooner man has been named the outstanding air national guardsman in the nation. SMSet. Gene W. Thompson, 36, a Spooner alderman, was 1 of 22 men from the major air force commands, air force reserve and air nation al guard picked as the top en listed members of their com mands for 1964. Gen. Curtis E. Lemay, air force chief of staff, an nounced the awards at a din ner of the Air Force associa tion at the Sheraton Park ho tel here Wednesday night. THOMPSON, who is at tending the association’s con vention with his wife, Avis, was chosen by the national guard bureau for outstanding performance as a guardsman and “‘for the significant role he has played in his com munity.” A national guard official said, ‘‘In Thompson's case, he does everything.” Thompson is first sergeant of the combat support squad ron of the 148th fighter group of the Minnesota air national guard at Duluth. HE DRIVES the 8 miles from Spooner (Washburn County) to Duluth one week end a month to attend drills. He has been with the air guard since 1960. He served 12 years as a tank comman der and platoon sergeant with the 32nd infantry division, Wisconsin national guard, at Spooner before moving to the air service. A 1946 graduate of Spooner high school, where he won letters in football, basketball and track, Thompson is a ‘milk distributor, volunteer ‘fireman, chairman of the street department, member of the city plan commission and member of the city industrial committee. He is a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, former chairman of the Spooner Cub Scout troop and chairman of the city’s hos pital committee.
