Escape of the Williams Brothers.Thursday the new* reached the city that the Supreme Court had affirmed the decision of the court below sod there «m nothing left but to forward John William* to the penitentiary for life. Judge then what moat hare been the rage and disappointment of the people geuerally when about *ix o’clock in the afternoon a negro came shouting through the streets that John Williams had escaped, and the jailer was locked up in his (Williams’) cell. Many regarded it a* a hoax. Our reporter went immediately to the jail, which ia on the outskirts of the city, and obtained from the imprisoned jailer hi* account of the escape, which ** as fol’ows .* John and a pi isoner named Roberts, charged with cow stealing, were confined in one cell, which had donhle doors, there beinj a space of eighteen inches between the two. The outer one is of solid oak, tbe iDner one is the same, except that it has a trap door through it, which ia used to pass water and provisions through. John was chained, Robei ts was not. They called to tbe jailer to get them some water. He came to the cell, opened the doors, and took out the bucket—left the inner door open bnl closed and fastened the outer door. When he returned with the water and opened the door, both prisoners immediately sprang upon him, John Williams having freed himself from his chain by means of a wooden key. They wrested tbe jailer's pistol from his hand and ordered him to much into the cell which, he did; they then locked the door, said goodbye and left without leaving word when they would return, *ook the kevs with them, leaving the jailer locked np so that no food could be passed ia to Him. Tbe jailer was released Friday morning bv brea’.ing open the door. The-e seems Co be no piospect of catching them.Waller Williams, who was out of jail tinder bond, was in town the evening of tbe escape, and left about 3 o’clock for his home in the country. He attempted to escape, but two of bis bondsmen captured and brought him to within a mile of town, when he swore he would come no further. Hence one of bis caplurers set out to to inFoim the Sheriff of his wbeieabonts leaving the o’her in charge. The Sheriff made his appealance, when Walter Williams jumped a horse a nd prepared for fight. Alf. Fa= neil. one of h*s bondsmen, tried to prevent, and Williams snapped bin pisto’ several times in Fa.nell’s face. FarneJl attended to fire, hot his weapon also njissed, and WaUer went off sco- t fiee.This whole affair, f-om tbe murder of Mi s. Brockeit to the present t:me has been a disgrace io the county. As the whole matter of t’.ie escape will be juuieally investigated by Judge Campbell, we forbear fuiiher common*.
