By BRIAN SPANO Special to The Examiner Sometimes in the game of football, the ball never bounces your way. And sometimes, it always does. That was the story of the Fort Osage and Raytown football squads Friday night from Ted Chittwood Stadium in Raytown. It seemed everything the Raytown Blue Jays touched turned to gold in their 41-21 victory over the Fort Osage Indians during the Suburban Middle Eight opener. For the Indians on the other hand, things just turned to tin, at least during the first half. Everything went Raytown’s way during that first half. From the opening drive that went 68 yards for a score to allowing Fort Osage (1-1) to cross the 50-yard line only two times. The Blue Jays were in complete con trol, posting four touchdowns in all during the first 24 minutes. And when Fort Osage was able to push the ball deep into Blue Jay territory late in the first quarter, the offense PREP FOOTBALL coughed it up. “We jumped on them early,” said Pete Carpino, head coach of the Baytown Blue Jays. “In the first half, our defense played very well, but I think they got a little tired in the second half. Still, it was a great win for us.” Fort Osage made a few adjustments in the locker room and was able to make a game of it in the second half. “We had to come out and put points on the board,” said wide receiver Josh Karney. “We came out flying to the ball more, and we knew we had to make plays and do our best to make them.” Still, turnovers and penalties plagued the Indians all night long. “The turnovers killed us,” said Fort Osage head coach Kevin Gundy. “We thought we had the momentum in the second half on Garret’s (Leimer) big run, but we gave right back to them on the fumble.” It seemed every time Fort Osage mounted a drive and looked as if the momentum had shifted to the other side of the field, a mistake would somehow befall the Indians. Leimer still had a huge night. He rushed for 183 yards on 24 carries and all three of his team’s touchdowns. It wasn’t enough to over come the four turnovers and seven penalties for 55 yards. Sylvester Gibson got Raytown on the board first with a 3-yard run in the first quar ter, then midway through the opening frame, quarterback Jonathon Wegener hit Mathew Powell for a 23 yard score. Martez Anderson added a 4-yard run and Gibson a 12-yarder to put the Blue Jays up 28-0 at the break. Patrick Coyle scored on a 4-yard gallop in the third, and Jordan Nelson returned a fumble 43 yards to ice it. Gibson finished the evening with two touchdowns and 145 yards rushing. “I love my brothers,” cornerback Lorentz Boyd said of the emotional win. “We came out focused and fired up and ready to go.”
