They bowed to pray in the holy name of the Eternal One. They closed their eyes hoping to purify their hearts.About 200 people of different races, ethnicities and ages united Monday night in a solemn remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001. Their skin colors were asinsignificant as the skin colors of those on streets of New York a year ago covered in gray ashes from head to toe.The Orange County Islamic Foundation-Mission Viejo Mas-jid hosted the inter-faith event called A Day of Unity and Prayer.Dr. Laila A1 Marayati, who was the host for the evening said she felt privileged to be there to commemorate the day that is etched in so many minds forever.“It is painful to bring those memories to the surface,” she said. “As a Muslim, I was stunned that anybody would think that such an act could be justified by our religion.Representatives of different faiths and religions took their turns to lead the audience in brief prayers.“May this land be influenced for good throughout this world, said Rabbi Michael► See UNITY, page 15
