By James Sloss STAFF WRITER The Wal-Mart Supercenter located in Clovis, the compa ny’s 500th, will open its doors for the public the first time at 8 a.m. Wednesday. “Preparations have gone as they should,” Frank Bean, manager said. Employees have been work ing for six weeks to get the store ready, Bean said. Events at the Supercenter's opening will include an auto graph session with Detroit Pis ton Terry Tyler and a band will in the garden center the Bunny ice cream and MM's candy will have their mascots on hand as well. Lt. Gov. Walter Bradley, Wal- Mart regional manager Buddy Caldwell and top executives of Wal-Mart will be in Clovis at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “We're definitely proud of the 500th Supercenter,” as, executive director of the Clovis/Curry Count Chamber of Commerce, said. “It will mean an increase in the gross receipts (sales tax rev enue) and the number of jobs in town.” The store will employee approximately 565 people, according to Bean. The Wal-Mart at the mall, which opened in October 1985, employed 280 people. A store is more than twice the size of the Wal-Mart locat ed in the North Plains Mall. At 203,000 square feet, the super center is about two-thirds the size of the entire mall. Various merchants in the mall have mixed emotions about the Wal-Mart closing. “We expect to see a 10 per cent dip in sales,” John Osbo, manager of the B. Dalton book store, said. Several merchants men tioned that the flow of traffic will be the biggest change without Wal-Mart. Sterling Bush, manager of the Tacs Box, redicted a slow down because here of his cus tomers are Wal-Mart employ ees. “It won't affect us,” Tina Kruse, manger of Maurices, said. “If people want Calvin Klein they'll still have come here.” Overall, Kos is optimistic about the new store's impact on Clovis. “Once you have a super Wal- Mart more corporations will look at us,” she said. “It’s for economic development here in Clovis.”
