The new Mt. Desert Island Hospital is $9.75 closer to being completely paid for because two enterprising youngsters found a way to convert sand dollars to real dollars and a small “pot of gold’”’ was delivered anonymously to the doorstep of the Building fund campaign office. There were two gifts - one of $4.54 and one of $5.21. Briefly, here’s what happened: Eight-year-old Frances Roberts and her friend, Julie Crofcot put their heads together last week, and came up with a pleasant and profitable scheme. They collected sand dollars along the water's edge at Seal Harbor. After dry ing their catch they painted each “dollar” with gay decorations and proceeded to sell them to bathers on the beach. Why they fixed the price their art treasures at ten and fi teen cents each has not been re vealed, but they sold them like hotcakes, racked up sales totali ng $4.54 -- not an exact multiple of ten cents or fifteen cents o: combinations thereof, but close enough when you are eight years young. Lee, regional director for the park service here September 5. But, he pointed out, the neces sary statutory changes cannot be obtained in Washington until some agreement is reached bet ween the park service and the Island communities as to where those boundaries should be. If no change in the law can be obtained, he said, the park service will have to continue any, and acquisition it may under take through the methods pr vided in the present law.
