Ralph C. Crawford, now of LaGrange and one of the first eight men assigned here back in 1937, helps to recall the first days of patrol here.Eight men came here to open the patrol station were Sgt. R. E. Wood, Corp. W. L. White, Troopers T. P. Cross, W. L. Brown, J. T. Burton, Bass Farr, Slaton Toler and Crawford.“One of these men was formerlyconnected with the State Hospital,” Lt. Crawford said, “one was a groceryman, two came out of the Army, one was an insurance agent, one a farmer and I came from a dairy farm. Bass Farr was the only one with police experience.“I believe only three are still with the patrol: Toler, Cross and myself. So far as I know all are alive.”The State of Georgia would pay only $25 a month for the barracks (now the office of Dr. A. G. Hen-Irick), Lt. Crawford says, so the ate Pitt M. Beckham would con-act the businessmen of the town ind raise the $120 difference. He aid he heard of only one man who urned him down.“I have pleasant memories of ur four years stay in Perry, Lt. Crawford said. “Our son, Bruce, vas born there 25 years ago this December. He’s an ensign in the 'sTavy, stationed at San Diego, Dalif.”The patrol barracks remained in he house at the corner of First itreet and Swift Street for sever-il years. In 1941 the present state atrol barracks was built with the iid of the county commissioners.
