By KAY CAGLE Times Feature Editor Move over Big Foot and other assorted creatures, the Blount County “Bogie” is roaming. Joe Pat Thorn, Randy Roberts, and Joe’s cousin, David Nelson, from Blount County were driving back home from Blountsville about a week ago. It was rather late at night and the boys in their Volkswagen twisted and turned along the narrow, snaky road. Dim headlights picked up shadows of tall pines and heavy kudzu vines brushed the sides of the vehicle. The boys were talking and driving very slowly around the narrow curves. The heat of the summer night caused them to lower the windows on the car. It appeared from no where. There on the side of the road they claimed to have seen the Blount County ‘‘Bogie.’’ Joe Pat says the three boys did not stay around to get a close look, but when their headlights shown on the figure it looked to be five feet tall and long black hair covered the entire body. Joe Pat said it looked as if it weighed about 300 pounds. Joe says they could not be sure whether it was walking on all four limbs or bending over to pick up an object. Since the sighting of this “creature” a number of boys in Center Hill have searched the wooded area in hopes of seeing “it” again. Others have reported sightings. One incident that reportedly happened two weeks ago involved a boy named Jones from the Blountsville area. He reportedly was driving across a bridge in the area and claims “something” ran across the road in front of him. When he slowed down whatever “‘it’’ was broke his windshield and disappeared into the woods. The most recent incident in the Chamblee Hill Creek mystery happened Saturday night when 20 teenage boys ventured out to find the ‘‘thing.’’ Parking the cars on the side of the road, they turned off the headlights and walked down a hill where they claimed they heard noises that sounded like a very loud possum moan. Jerry Nuss, operator of a Super Saver at Center Hill, says the adults are somewhat skeptical of the tales told by the youngsters. He says when he was about 15- years-old he and some of the other boys saw a half-man, half ape creature in the area, about three feet tall. “Maybe it just grew up,” Nuss explains. It Was First Sighted Here Joe Pat Thorn points out the edge of the woods where he first saw the “creature” that is reportedly roaming the Chamblee Hill Creek area.
