Statement from Tribal ChairmanThere has been a lot of inquires in my office about the under ground test, called “Gas Buggy.’’Questions of fears and what extent the effects of the explosion will we have on the town of Dulce.To the best of my knowledge, from talking to experts and specialist is this sort of project, I have gathered what I now will tell you in my own words.As far as feeling the explosion, it will be hardly noticeable, certain persons will be telling of different times through rumors that the windows will shake and possibly even start the earth quake again. The people I’ve discussed this with assure me this will never happen.The A.E.C. has done projects in Alaska and other earth quake Areas, and they found that this type of operation does not start an earth quake. Public safety isconsidered in every phase of the operation no nuclear detonation is ever authorized unless there is assurance of safety for the public are agencies of the Government and other organizations connected with project Gas Buggy are governed by this policy. The utmost attention is paid to all factors that may have any influence on safety of individual on the general public, such as ground shock and radio activity in under ground water or in the air.It should be noted that no damage is expected out side the gas buggy test site area, and little, if any inside the area.I don’t think we have anything to worry about, taking into consideration Navajo Dam is about 23 miles away and El Vado Dam is 28 miles away and Dulce is 31 miles from the test site. With this in mind every precaution is being taken to provide safety for all of us.
