Out in Pottawattamie county they are enjoying the benefits of their drainage diteh, and here is a report appearing in the Register and Leader a few days ago, indicating- a feeling of satisfaction with the the way it works:A better pleased people than those living along and whose property is affected by the now nearly completed Crescent drainage ditch would be hard to find, aud the wonderful benefits in the way of reclamation of waste land was never more fully illustrated than here.Hundreds of acres of land that heretofore has not only never produced g crop of anything but mosquitos . d disease breading germs, this year nas been made to produce as fine crops as are to be found anywhere, This land, formerly absolutely valueless, cannot now be bought for less than $15 an acre, and much of it would bring more than that.The contractors encountered unfor-seen difficulties, but notwithstanding have made great progress. Two big railway systems had to be crossed and one expensive breakdown added to the difficulties. North from Crescent there is a solid body of corn where for seven years not a plow has molested the dirt, and some of it has been untilla-ble fcr from 12 to 15 years.Another great result to which the people call attention with pride, is that the highways, formerly impassable during more than six months in the year, are now in fine condition andeasily kept so. From nothing to a crop conservatively estimated at $60 an acre, looks almost impossible of accomplishment, but that is what is claimed as the facts. If anyone is seeking after a community where there is a solid belief in the benefits of drainage ditches they will only have to come to Crescent to find one.
