W. Willard was Obliged yesterday to make an assignment and suspend publication.The paper would have made a success under the new management if the city had been big enough to support three dailies.Dr. Dougali. a man of great personal magnetism and large following, on Recount of his social qualities and 1 ong acquaintances with all classes, and Mr. E. W. Willard, an old time resident of this county and of wide influence in political circles, were both the kind of men to feake a newspaper successful. Besides they secured a staff of experience newspaper men, Messrs J. MeNamee. W S. McCaull, Mr. Tomb-Hn and John Kutx, bright, active and capable men, and everything looked bright for the paper, but as time rolled on the proprietors discovered what we could hare told them long before that this city is not large enough to support more than two daily papers. There are thousands of oeople who do not take and read daift papers-Swedee, Norwegians, Polos, Italians, French, Negroes, Germans, besides many of the Irish and American families. Lacking the support of these thousands the paper could not succeed.The advertising prices in Juliet are * so low that it is barely possible fornewspapers to live. In column ram hi seldomIn other cities the __less than fivedollars for each Insertion and the rate per line is double,that in Joliet.The prices for job work in Joliet are also extremely low and many Joliet people send abroad for their work although it can be done welt at home But the principal loss in the fact thatJoliet newspapers are published at a rat© than ilower rate than any other similar pa-pers in the state. The ruling price for papers of the class of the Nem and Re PUBLIC and Sun is fifty to sixty cents per month in Rockford, Freeport, Rock Island, Bloomington, Springfield, Peoria, Racine, Janesville, mid other cities. While in the smaller places ten cents a week is obtained.One dog in the manger fellow at Jo liet started thenickle a week plan hoping to kill out all opposition and make great, but after a dozen years be finds himself poor.
