Llewellyn, adjourned from Tuesday last, waa called on, and Mr Smith, who appeared for tho complainant, said that Amia, one of the men, was laid up with rheumatism. He had seen Dr Markham, who bad given a certificate, and he might probably have to ask for a further adjournment until 2 o’clock to allow of the Doctor’s attendance. Mr Wigley calledKobert Caithness Begg, master of the Oak I unde, who said that he had inspected the forecastle of the Alfred Hawley. The deck had been caulked, a new batch cover and hinges had been provided, and a new ladder down into the forecastle : the bunks had all beeo rebottomed, the hatch at the bottom of the ladder had been reuewed and now fitted properly; a now ventilator had been put in the deck, and tho forecastle had been thoroughly cleaned and painted. The tail of the cat head bad been newly caulked and provided with a canvas coating oovering the seam. He had last inspected the vessel sbout an hour ago. The forecastle should now be dry and also comfortable. He saw Mr Iznor testiog the work. He gave it a very severe teatJohn Melville, harbor master, and inspector under the Marine Board, corrobo rated.Henry Gillin Williams, shipwright, Port Augusta, said that he did tho caulking on the Alfred Hawley. He had beard Capt. Begg’s description of the work done, whiob was correct, and the forecastle should now be dry and comfortable.In cross-examination tbe witness said that it was not usual to remove the windlass except when a vessel was being caulked to bo re-claased.Mr Fmitb calledWilliam Iznor, of Port Augusta, shipwright, who said he had had between 31 and 32 years experience in his trade Iio had examined the caulking on tlx Alfred Hawley. Some of the seami were bad. In heavy weather tbe part* that were not properly done would ieak. Ho marked the places with which he was dissatisfied with chalk. Tbe deck under the windlass bad been “ chensed—it could not be caolked. Tbe witness then detailed several points in which tbs work was faulty.Kobert McKenzie, of Port Augusts, ship carpenter, with 26 years experience, said he had examined the csulking and found aome places soft and some bard.
