In a speech delivered by him at Mansfield, Ohio, on the 23d nit., he said:“Are there no men who cast their votes in Kichland county less competent by want Of Intelligence than some ot your black men In the country' t It Is so all over the State. So that plea will not answer.’” In a speech delivered by this same gentleman at Columbus a lew days previous to thu delivery of the speech at Mansfield, we find him reported in the Ohio State Journal, the organ of the radical party lu Ohio, as saying:“But I will reply to the allegation that a negro Is unfit lor the ballot on account of hU ignorance. I submit, frllow-cliizeus, whether the Black man is not better fitted for tho ballot than the same number of white men that could be found in Ohio.The persons that compose the same number ol white men” spoken off by Col. Lee, are thus dealt with by Ben. Wade, the Radical Vice President, lu a speech delivered at Marietta:“It you will take the poor Irishman, or other foreigner, who comes here, and know* nothing of our Institutions ; If you will permit him to vote after five years residence, then f insist upon the same rights for the other cla sol persons, {the negroes.) ■ • • As a mass-they (the negroes) are better qualified to discharge their duties under this Government than the great mass, equal lo them In numbers, that we have always permitted to vote. • • • I am ghd to see that those people whom your Legislature lias referred it UJ you toAlay, whether they shall lie voters or not, are Infinitely above the class that l have alluded to In all that intelligence that qualifies a man to vote right I”Hou. John Sherman, ol the Radical U.S. Senators iroin Ohio, and who is to come to Steubenville shortly to enlighten our cili-zeus, foreigners included, lu a speech delivered at Akron, this State, a lew days since, made use of the following language: “I do not see why the negro is not as good as the foreigucr who is naturalized and has Ids vote.”A Rtdical stumper, by the name of McFarland. at the same meeting, made use of the following language:“It was especially necessary to have the negro to vole, or else the Democrats would get into power, and as all the Pennsylvania dutch were were Democrats, he wanted the nigger to put thrni down. He also salil that he eonld not see why Ihe negro, who was born in this country, should not have a vote as well as the Germans and Irish who were foreigners.”R. P. Spalding, a Radical member of Congress from Ohio, another speaker at tne panic Akrou meeting, made use of the lullnwiug language In his speech :“He would not go in for the social equality of the negro; that he would not permit a negro to come Into his bed room, neither would he permit an irishman or a Dutchman to come in.”Es-Governor Curtin, of Penn- another tainted high priest or the Radical party, not long since made use of the following language.:“A Dutchman is not like another person; he has two skulls, and in order to get an* unknown idea into bis head, you must break one ots terms of i,ic .n,,!]- »dally tbnaa d too lo'g and aa.llie Kirin* pop-ice nhall no lo flit thecontrary to polity, andly in the soil to be in mn the poo-heir a most thr poll*, bybis skulls.”J. M. Asbley. a Radical Congressman from Ohio, and who is now on Che stump for that party, Introduced a resolution in the last congress “that no foreigner should become a citizen unless he could read and write English, thus making no provisions lor the negro in regard to reading and writing. and making him better than thu white ■nan.”The Cleveland Herald, a promlnant radical organ ot this State, makes use of the following language In Its editorial colutns:“We unhesitatingly aver that eeven-tenths of the foreigners in our land, who bow in obedience to the Pope of Rome, are not as Intelligent as the fall Blooded Africans—we will not include the part Bloods.”We might go on ant! fill our columns with extracts from the Mew York Tribune, St. Paul Pretz. Cincinnati Gazelle. Cleveland Leader, and other radical papers, attempting to show that the negro is superior and above the foreigner, “asaclass.”We believe them are no white men In Oliio to-day who are as ignorant as the Radi-ul party intlmutis, unless It be those wboaLlemptto make the negro tbeirrqual, snd, iu some cases, their superior. The foreigner, allbough he may not be able to speak or read our lauguagu as perfectly as the natives. Is generally well educated lu bU native country, and Is so tar superior to the negro that there Is no reason tor com-pariEou. They are an industrious, frugal and thrifty class of citizens, always looking to the interests and welfare of their adopted country, and have done their full share lu making It one of the greatest nations of the world, whether in the workshop, on the farm, or in bearing Its flag on the tented field. As we have delendtd this class of citizens In times gone by. when the Radical papers and orators attempted to proscribe and disfranchise them, so are we prepared lo do so again, and especially at a time when it is sought to bring in comparison with them an ignorant and inferior race.
