TEXARKANA C/P)—A jeering crowd of about- 300 adults and male students massed in front of Texarkana college this morning, and turned away two Negroes who tried to enter.Some gravel was thrown at the Negroes, a boy and a girl.Four Texas Rangers and Bowie county officers hovered nearby as the crowd moved back and forth between the Negroes and the sidewalk leading into Texarkana college.Finally, a Her 15 minutes packed with tension, the two Negroes climbed into a taxi and rolled away.A Texarkana newsman, Bob M unde Ha, says the tension of the crowd was so great that had a single real stone been thrown, a riot might have broken out.The Negro girl 18-year-old Jessolyn. Gray, was seeking to report, for her first classes at the Texarkana junior college. Shu passed an intelligence test last Wednesday and became the first Negro to enroll at the college. Another Negro girl who passed the test, Laura Ellis, did not appear this morning.lyfiss Gray's companion in the effort to enter the school was 17-ycar-old Steve Poster.Pickets carried signs in frortl of the Texarkana junior college saying;“No NAACP Goons ‘'No NAACP Communism,’’ “Go North. Nigger,” and other similar signsThe ’ college has been ordered by a Federal Court order to admit ,Negroes. Texas Rangers were on hand to keep order. J he two Negroes later returned. They appealed to the Rangers to take them through the protesting crowd into the college. But Inc Rangers said they were not faking part in the integration dispute - - • and were present only to preserve law ynd order.
