Amarillo, Texas, Sept. 10.—Mis taken identity is blamed, for the shooting of five young people near Shamrock yesterday, in state ments reported to have been made by three victims in a hospital here and by Perry Coonse, a farmer, held at Wheeler in connection with the case. , Coonse is said to have told au thorities he believed the automo bile into which he fired five times with a shotgun as it “passed his farm, carried men who whipped him recently. Cecil Rook, and Mabel and Mat tie Elmer, the three most seriously wounded, probably will lose their eyesight as a result of the shoot ing. By Associated Press. _, McLean, Texas, Sept. 10.—Cecil Rook and Misses Mattie Elmer and Mabel Elmer were seriously wound ed and Chick Elmer and Miss Mary Elmer sustained slight injuries when the automobile in which they were riding was fired upon a Tues day night near the Carpenter schoolhouse, about, eighteen miles northeast of McLean. No motive is known for the shooting. A farmer living in the vicinity of the shooting is in jail at Wheel er in connection with the affair. The victims of the shooting were on their way to Amarillo in, an am bulance and another motor car from Shamrock. Little hope is held for the recovery of Cecil Rock, whose face, neck and shoulder were filled with shot. The condi tion of Mattie and Mariel Elmer al so is said to be serious. The young people live in Carpenter commu nity, near here. W. EB. Taylor, Deputy Sheriff, who took the man into custody said boys had been committing depreda tions on the man's farm in the last few months. Gates were opened and cattle let out, water tanks were drained and the man some times called from his bed.
