CRIME: Teacher accused of sex crimes may have attempted suicide. By SILVIO J. PANTA Staff Writer BARSTOW — Thomas Mantey, the sixth-grade Daggett Middle School teacher charged with ille gally touching numerous under age girls, apparently attempted suicide Tuesday and failed to ap pear for a courtroom hearing Wednesday. Paramedics rushed to Mantey’s Princeton Drive home Tuesday morning on a medical aid call, Division Chief Rene Ramos of the Barstow Fire Pro tection District said Wednesday. Mantey was given “advanced life support” during the 10:08 a.m. call and taken to Barstow Community Hospital, Ramos said. The Barstow Police Depart ment would not comment on why Mantey needed emergency med ical treatment or discuss the na ture of the call. But a police log entry showed an employee at the welding busi ness where Mantey works alert ed police Tuesday the former teacher told another co-worker by telephone he wanted to kill himself because of his legal problems. The log entry listed Mantey’s home address. BCH officials said Mantey was not on their patient list and Loma Linda University Medical Center didn’t have him listed, either. Police know where Mantey is, but because of confidentiality is sues and the nature of the para medic response, will not talk about the case, Cpl. Mark Franey of the Barstow Police Depart ment said. Mantey, who faces 10 misde meanor counts of annoying or molesting a child under 18, did not appear Wednesday before Superior Court Judge James Dorr for the session that would have decided which courtroom to hear his case in, Deputy District Attorney Britt Imes said. Defendants are required to show up during an “assignment calendar” hearing, which pre cedes another courtroom appear ance where a trial date is set, Imes said. Dorr issued a $50,000 bench warrant for Mantey’s ar rest, the prosecutor said. Mantey was free after posting bail following his arrest in Feb ruary and would have to be ar rested again and arraigned on the warrant, Imes said. The court also would have to determine whether the 52-year old Barstow man should remain in custody. Please see MANTEY, A3
