W, M. WhelessWilliam Meade (Fishback) Wheless, pioneer oil scout former South Texan and one of the big landowners in the Houston area, died there last weekend after a short illness and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery there Tuesday.Wheless was 78. He had started his petroleum career when' scouts—and even petroleum—were new, on March 1, 1913, when he began working for Gulf Oil Corp. His first Job was as assistant clerk in ihe Beaumont headquarters office, but it wasn't long before he was scouting. He retired in 1955 as vice president of land and teasing for Gulf,Wheless got his first two names and the nickname Fish-, back from his grandfather, an early governor of Arkansas. He was one DF the first oil scouts to make the South Texas scene after ost was discovered in Zapata and Webb County by the [ate CMV, Killam of haredo. In 192-3, he transferred to Seguirt to keep up with the failing boom, and in 1924 he moved to San Antonio with the title of zone agent. In recent years, he and Jim Abercrombie had been partners in the large CSneo Ranch near Houston and in an 8,(1 Ofl*a ere outfit in Fort -B^ld County.Survivors include Mrs. W he less, who live-s at 3203 Reba Dr. in Houston.
