Wheless, a native of Fort Smith, Ark., and a Houston resident 43 years, died Sunday.An employee of Gulf Oil Co.'s land division for 40 years, Wheless retired in the mld-1950’s to become a land Investor. He held interest in 15,000 acres in and around Harris County, including Atascocita Country Club and Cinco Ranch.He was a charter member of the Houston Club and a member of the Houston ; Country Club.Survivors Include his wife, Mary Elizabeth, daughter, Mrs. Mary Wheless Powell, both of Houston; son, William M. Jr. of Cinco Ranch; sister, Mrs. Adelaide Bollman of San Antonio; brothers, Randolph F. of Houston and Joseph of San Antonio; eight grandchildren, Kathy PowellBoortz, Newport Beach, R.I., Barbara Powell, SusanPowell, Nancy Wheless, Mary Patricia Wheless, WillUam Meade Wheless 1H, David Brownell Wheless, and Robert Wheless, and a great-granddaughter, Mary Kay Wheless, all of Houston.Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, with arrangements by Settegast-Kopf Co.Several local area men who had farmed rice with Mr. Wheless, are Roger Hoyt, Penn Aldrich, Harold John son, and others.
