Aspirants for the Grand Tro phy at the Mongrel Marathon, have gone past the 100 mark as of today. There was 107 en trants, to be exact, waiting to try for the title of top dog come Oct. 6 at the Rocky Mountain Kennel Club. Twins Matt and Mark Force, 10, 2933 Mt. Washington St., are hoping Bottoms will come out on top. That’s the name of their 1-year-old Terrier. Lida Rose is hoping for a bet ter showing this year. She’s a Collie entered by Eric Hagen, 11, 2010 Prong Horn Lane. Tim Baker, 11, 2680 Chelton Road, has high hopes for Candy, his Poodle, and the same goes for Mark Sandy, 7, 4002 Wakely Drive, who has entered a Doxy ,named Snoopy, a very popular name for dogs it seems. A second Terrier, was one ,named Spook, is hoping to win the grand prize for Pam Kor dula, 11, 805 Juanita St., and Mickey Sullivan, G. Air Force ‘Academy, is betting on the luck of the Irish with Sean, an Aust ralian Sheepdog. Missey, a 30-pound Corgi, has been entered by Darrell Moss berry, 9, 2927 N. Institute St. Some mixed breeds hoping Poochie won't capture a third Grand Trophy include: Jamie, part Collie entered by David Lee, 11, 2841 Marilyn Road; Pete, a Cocker mix en tered by Kim Bevers, 6, 3820 Windsor Ave.; Alfie, entered by Deborah Cowan, 11, 2520 Prairie Road; Puppy, a Terrier mix owned by Elaine Cardoza, 11, 2206 Bison Drive; Gris, part German Shepherd and “hound” entered by Cassy Kiley, 11, Route 1; Skeeter, a Terrier mix owned by Scott Strain, 10, 6765 Prince Drive; Black Sambo, a mixed Manchester entered by Billy Wright, 12, 2309 E. Willa mette Ave., and Duchess, a Scotty Poodle entered by Judy Williams, 11, 2606 N. Prospect St The Mongrel Marathon is sponsored by the Gazette Tele graph and the Rocky Mountain s Kennel Club with the cooper ation of the Pikes Peak Kiwanis Club. All proceeds from the benefit event go to the service, club’s Youth Welfare Fund. Members of the Kiwanis Club will man the Marathon, acting as handlers for the dogs and also judging the event. Their word will be final. Dogs will be arranged in preliminary races according to their weights and the club members will hold them at the starting line while their owners race up to the fin ish line. Then the children will start shouting encouragement to their poochies and the handlers will let them go. First one across the line gets a trophy in each preliminary race. They will then be divided into four sem ifinal races, with winners of the each race winning trophies, and these four will then race in the Grand Championship event. All will win trophies here. Price of admission for the Marathon is 25 cents with no charge for the children entering dogs.
