By BEN BOROWSKY Courier-Times Sports Editor Paul Goldsmith spent most of yesterday traveling, but it was very worthwhile. Goldsmith, one of the real “gentlemen” among the auto racing drivers, flew his own plane from Detroit to the Mercer County Airport yesterday morning. A few hours later he switched to a 1963 Plymouth sedan and proceeded to set a pair of records as he breezed to victory in the 250-mile late model stock car race before 20,000 fans at Langhorne Speed way vehicles and immediately started looking for a car he could drive. John Kilborn, driving a '63 Dodge, was in the pits for fuel. Foyt, who is in the running for the late model stock car point champion ship, began talking to Kilborn. Persuasive Pitch Paul, who hails from St. Clair Shores, a Detroit suburb, finished a full lap ahead of his Plymouth teammate, Norm Nelson, and six laps ahead of third place finisher A. J. Foyt. Until last week, Foyt was Nel son’s teammate, but A. J. quit in order to switch over to driving a Ford. Goldsmith took over A.J.'s old car and rocketed to a new one mile record for late model stock cars as he won the pole position. New One Mile Mark Paul was clocked in 37.295 sec onds (96.527 MPH) bettering the mark set last May by A.J. in the same '63 Plymouth — 37.466 sec onds (96.087 MPH) He jumped into the lead and stayed there for the entire 250 miles, except for two laps when he made his first pit stop. Paul pulled into the pits on the 85th lap for fuel and to correct an over heating problem. His crew had him winging again in just 26 sec onds, but during that time he lost the lead to Foyt. A.J. held the lead for just two laps and then on the 88th trip around the ‘Horne oval. Johnny Rostek took a spin on the second turn and Foyt ran into him. The caution flags were displayed, but neither driver was injured. Foyt hopped a lift back to the pits with one of the emergency The Texan's pitch was persua sive and Kilborn relinquished his mount to Foyt. Kilborn was in 11th place at the time, and A.J. did some masterful driving, working his way up to third place. His share of the purse and the points will have to be pro-rated between Kilborn and himself. Twenty - six cars started the event and 15 were still running at the finish. Tires seemed to hold up very well for all cars but over heating did sideline a number of cars. Jim Hurtubise, one of the nation’s leading drivers, couldn't even get his car out of the pits to take time trials. Three Caution Flags The caution flags were out only three times. One time was when Bill Cheesbourg spun on the fourth turn, hit the outside rail, bounced off and came to a dead stop near the inside rail. Bill was not hurt and even managed to restart his car and bring it into the pits for repairs. Nelson, who finished in the run ner-up spot, owns his own Ply mouth and the one Goldsmith drove, Goldsmith covered the distance in two hours, 41 minutes and 48.9 seconds (92.706 MPH) to break Mike Klapak’s record of three hours, four minutes and 11.08 sec onds (81.440 MPH). Owns Four Records Goldsmith now owns four of the 24 Langhorne Speedway rec ords, more than anyone else. In addition to the two he set yester day, Paul also holds the time trial mark for late model stock convertibles and the 300 - mile record for late model stock se dans. A former motorcycle champion, Paul now races only in late mod el stocks and in the champion ship division only at Indianapolis. He's a busy businessman, dab bling in real estate, engaged in the aluminum industry and plan ning to get into the aircraft in dustry with Ray Nichols, chief mechanic for many Goldsmith driven autos. Nichols is now in the process of readying two 1963 cars, a Ply mouth and a Dodge, for Gold smith to drive. The cars should be ready shortly. Don White finished fourth in a 1963 Ford, while Curtis Turner took fifth in a similar car. Plymouth cars took four of the first seven places, as Frankie Sch wedier and Herb Shannon drove 1963 Plymouths to sixth and sev enth places.
