I allude to the large match factory which is now in full and successful operation here. I paid it a visit the other day, and under the guidance of the polite superintendent, Mr. C. J. Lee, was shown entirely through it. As I believe many of your readers would be interested in knowing exactly how machines are made, I will give briefly the whole modus operandi.Oblong blocks of white pine, two by five inches square and ten inches long are placed in a complicated machine through which they quickly pass and come out split up into little sticks of the size but just twice the length of a match. These sticks are packed in cases and carried to the “drying room,” where, under a high degree of heat, created by steam pipes, they remain several days in order that they may become thoroughly dried,They are then carried to a room where they are arranged in a most ingenious way for having their ends dipped into the chemical composition of which the heads are made. They are thrown loosely into a “hopper,” exactly like tne hopper of an ordinary grist mill, only not so large. From this hopper they are fed into a machine that binds them up with strips of cloth into largecircular bundles, composed of concentric rings, the whole forming a disc or solid wheel a foot and a half in diameter. The sticks are so arranged in this bundle that they do not quite touch each other, each one standing separately, so that when the eHds are dipped in the phosphorous the heads will not run together. In each bundle there are four thousand sticks, and as each stick represents twe matches, there are eight thousand matches in a bundle. These bundles are takenLETTER FROM TH-IWttkFranklin, N.
