20 The Western Canadian, Manitou, Manitoba -- Tuesday, September 8, 2015Softball Canada Announces 2015 Hall of Fame InducteesJuanita Clayton a Member of Smitty’s Sr. Women’s TeamSoftball Canada recently announced their list of inductees to the 2015 Hall of Fame Class, and among them was the 1993 - 1997 Smitty’s Senior Womens’ Team who Juanita Clayton, formerly of Kaleida, was a member.The 1993 - 1997 Smitty’s Senior Women’s Team (Winnipeg, MB) won five consecutive Canadian Championship medals, working its way up with a Bronze medal in 1993 followed by a Silver medal in1994 before winning three consecutive Gold medals from1995 to 1997.The first of those three Gold medals came 30 years after Manitoba’s first (and to thatpoint only) Gold medal at the Senior Women’s level, and the team was led by Roy and Eve-lyne Holenski who are also being inducted in the Hall of Fame this year.Juanita, along with teammates Karen Doell, Heather Newsham, Sandy Newsham and Deb Sonnenberg, eachwent on to play in the Olympic Summer Games - Clayton, Doell and Sonnenberg in 1996 and Heather and Sandy Newsham in 2000.The inductees will join the Softball Canada Hall of Fame at an Induction ceremony which will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 in Winnipeg.Along with the Smitty’s Senior Women’s Team, other inductees include Bruce Bier-man (Official - Ontario), Roy and Evelyne Holenski (Builders - Manitoba), Heather Newsham (Athlete - Manitoba) as well as the 1994 - 1996 Smitty’s Midget Girls’ Team.In 2008 Juanita was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in the Athlete/ Softball category.
