Earl Presley, football coach at Duncan High School, had a casualty before the season got under way. Starting cen ter Rocky Howle broke his right hand the first day of practice. Bill Handsley, one of two juniors on the otherwise senior starting lineup, moved in the spot. Presley also listed Jim — as a possible starter along wi th seniors who “must play some place,” he said. The coach, whose team tied for the Boomer Conference crown with Norman last year, listed Mseng as the starting quarterback if the De mons played today. In giving the starting lineup he said, “We'll be shifting personnel around day by day and hope to come up with a te ntative when we play state favorite Midwest City.” Monte Whisenant and Mike Tillman would get the starting call at the end positions. Whis enant, a senior, would be on what Presley calls the power side of the line. Darrell Murray and Mike Gibbons would be the tackles with Murray on the power side. Handshy, the cen ter, would be flanked by Robert Rosser and Ray Stevenson, with Rosser the power guard. Only Handshy is a junior tailback, Dwayne Perkins or Jerry Morgan at wingback and Tom Klingensmith at fullback. Klingensmith is a 190-pound senior with good power, — and no experience, played behind Don Christian last year. With some experience under his belt, Klingensmith will help the Demons to re main rspectable. Burum is the fastest football player in the history of Duncan High School. He set sprint and hurdle records at DHS last year in the shadow of Harold Colbert a year ago. He didn’t see much action behind the all-stater, but he must click if the Demons are to have any outside threat at all. Ray Stevenson, 230-pounder , is middle guard on offense and strong side guard on offense. He earned a letter but wasn’t a re gular. He played behind another all-stater, Leroy Taylor, on fense until the middle of the sea son, then was shifted to a part time tackle on defense. With his size and agility, he could be a big factor in the Duncan offen sive line this year. Mike Gullett is the only re turning regular and he comes as a linebacker. He was listed early as an alternate end on of fense. He will play somewhere and possibly be a guard or tackle on offense. Gullett is the mon ster-linebacker on defense. He tips the scales at 185. Juniors make up half of the alternate and third units as 12 of the 24 men listed are still a year away and two are moves. Alternates include seniors Mike Gullett, John Bob Whitten and Luther McGee on the power side of junior center Don Taylor. Don Roberts, a senior, and juniors Rick Lawrence and Mike Morgan are to the slot side of Taylor. Junior Tom Douglass of Bu rum would be running the team with seniors Billy Taylor and Don Brooks at tailback and ick. Freddy Moore would duties with Joey Whetsel on the next unit with juniors Melvin Bruner and Thomas Lewis in the deep spots with Whetsel or Mike Sheppard, a senior. Presley lost 22 men via gradu ation last year and talks of the new season concerned with lack of experience and size. Only nine lettermen are back this fall plus Gullett, a starter. “To give you can idea of size, our line started last season aver aging around 190 and by the end of the season came close to 200,” Presley remarked. “Right now, we would be fielding a starting line averaging 165. We can hope, though, that the average will get bigger as the season wears on.” TACKLES — Darrell Murray John Bob Whitten, Jr.; Danny Cope. Mike Gibbons, Sr. Jim Parks, 9sF.; Greg Cooke, soph.
