In Old New Mexico .AWAITS HANGING—This manacled prisoner in the Las Vejras jail looks discouraged. He ought to be. He is John Joshua Webb, waiting to be hanged for murder.Las VegasBy ANDY GREGGA gang of swindlers, gunmen and robbers ruled the new town of Las Vegas for about eight months in 1879 and 1880. The leader of the gang was a dap-per gent named Hyman G. Neill, alias Hoodoo Brown. His followers were known as the Dodge City Gang.Neill and his henchman, a young man named John Schun-derberger (nicknamed Dutchy, naturally) arrived with the railroad in 1879. Neill’s first step was to be appointed Justice of the Peace in East Las Vegas. His next step was to have the chief of police murdered. Neill’s new chief was Joe Carson. His constables included Mysterious Dave Mather (former leader of the Dodge City vigilantes — the Stranglers) train robber Dave Rudabaugh, gambler John Joshua Webb and others of the same stripe.Mather, Carson and Rudabaugh robbed the stagecoaches and trains. No one suspected them. Carson was even awarded a gold watch by the Adams Express Company for helping protect their shipments. His help? He arrested innocent people for his own crimes.Las Vegas already had a vigilance committee. In July, they had hung two men from the windmill in the old Las Vegas plaza. They, like most of the citizens, were fooled by Neill. But they soon began to wonder about his gamy friends.James Allen.a waiter at the St. Nicholas Hotel and a member of the gang, shot a salesman in the hotel dining room. The two had argued over a plate of eggs. Allen was lynchedIn January. 1880, Joe Carson and deputies Mather and Rudabaugh tried to arrest four Texans who were carrying guns. In the ensuing fight, Carson was killed but his two helpers killed one Texan and wounded another. The other two escaped and were later captured and lynched along with the wounded TexanOn Match 2, Hoodoo Brown’s grip faltered. J. J. Webb boldly murdered a respected ranch owner and rifled his wallet Webb surrendered, and Hoodoo fled with Carson’s widow. Rudabaugh and another member of the gang killed a jailer while trying to spring Webb from the Las Vegas jail. Webb refused to go, thinking he would be acquitted. Roybal, Box 33, Hernandez, stop sign violation.Leo Herrera, Espanola, drunk and disorderly. ,George V. Griego, Dixon, speeding 55 mph in a 45 mph zone.Fidel Garcia, ^Abiquiu, accompanying an intoxicated driver.Stella B.
