X*thend;ntlornmmrnmm+mmmmmmfi—Obituary,We are pained indeed to be called on to day to write the bbituary of Charles E. Ward, who died in this city on Tuesday evening. It is a penalty the journalist pays that he must see his friends borne away in death and endeavor to crowd into a few newspaper lines his deep regard for the departed. Yet, while he sorrows over the loss of a friend like Charles E. Ward, he rejoices that at least he catf add his testimony to the worth of the departed. Mr. Ward came to Joliet in 1854, and immediately purchased a half interest in the planing mill of which he became sole proprietor in 1859. Twelve years after Mr. Ward suffered a great loss in the burning of'his mill, but never losing courage he re-built and was for a time very prosperous. Of late, however, Mr. Ward, had not been doing so wWl, and died a poor man. And this because of the great- depression in real estate values. Had it been otherwise and had his property maintained its value, he would have died a wealthy man. Added to this was the failure, some time since, of the insurance company in which he had insured his life.In politics Mr. Ward was a republican, but so great was the regard felt for him in both parties that he was several times elected to city offices by democrats. For a number of years Mr. Ward was the earnest, efficient superintendent of the Central Presbyterian Sunday school, and was an honored member of the church. He died as he had lived—loved and respected as only an upright, pure-minded Christian gentleman can be, and he “So lived, that when the summons came to join The innumerable caravan, that moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death,He went, not like the quarry-Blave at night, Scourged to'his duDgeon; but sustained and soothedBy an unfaltering trust, approached the grave, Like one who draws the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.”
