Trif lity Episcopal Church* - The Trinity Episcopal Church is celebrating its sesquicenntenial anniversary this year. What better way to celebrate than to join the Home Tour? The tour was founded by several Trinity church women and began as a kitchen tour. Visitors will be entranced by the beautiful stained glass windows. Perhaps the most famous is the “Te Deum window (left), which was installed 26 years ago. It features the Christ figure surrounded by the saints and martyrs. It also contains a miniature replica of the Brooks Fountain in the bottom right corner. As in all churches, the centerpiece of attention is the altar. The altar (right) is a combination of beauty and religous function. It is made of marble and is in memory of Mary R. Schuyler, a relative of the ehurch’s founder,Montgomery Schuyler.(Photos by Susan Grant.)Worship and beauty peacefully co- exist«By SUSAN GRANTBeauty and history is combined in the Trinity Episcopal Church which is celebrating Its sesquicenntenial anniversary this year.Although the parish has been in existence since 1836, the current building was erected in 1864 at a cost of approximately $10,000According to Rev. Warner White, the sandstone Victorian Gothic church is builtin the traditional cross style. The altar composes the head of cross while the choir and pulpit make up the arms.Newer churches are no longer built in the traditional style, White added. But it is the beauty of the interior that truly awes the visitor. When walking into the Trinity Episcopal Church, one can’t help noticing thebeauty of the stained glasswindows which line the walls.Perhaps the best known of the church’s many glass windows is the “Te Deumwindow, installed 26 years ago in honor of the late Harold and Gladys Brooks. In the lower right hand corner, an image of the Brooks Memorial Fountain is depicted. However, the rich blue backround in the window really highlights the Christ figure as he is surrounded by the saints and martyrs of Christianity.Although the “Te Deum” window is perhaps the most impressive window in the church, do not overlook the others. The oldest window is a simple design of red, yellow and blue paper on the glass. There are other windows cut from Tiffanyglass with beautifullypainted designs.I espite the grandeur of the windows and the other n agificant furnishings, the church seems to welcome all visitors and make them feel at home. The rich blues, reds and purples of the stained glass do not overwhelm the visitor, but rather bring a sense of peace and security.During the years, the church has undergone some changes such as adding a parish house and an educational wing. But despite the additions and some major restoration on the sandstone and spiral, the church retains much of its charm. In addition to the windows, visitors should not forget the marble altar or the walnut stained ceiling which creates echoes out of even the softest of voices.
