(Staff Writer) A charge of discrimination against the Galesburg Equal Opportunity Office is being in vestigated by the city mana ger and the Human Relations Commission. The complaint was present ed to the Human Relations Commission at its meeting Wednesday night at City Tall. Lupe Vasquez, a commis sioner said a Mexican-Ameri can girl brought the complaint to him. EQO is primarily a job referral agency for the city and emphasizes helping minority individuals to find employment. Vasquez said the girl knew of a job opening two weeks prior to its becoming avail able and went to Mrs. Iona Hendricks, executive director of HOO, to ask her help in get ting it. He said Mrs. Hendricks never contacted the girl again and that she later learned a black girl had been referred to the job. Vasquez said when he approached Mrs. Hendricks to question her about the com plaint she refused to talk to him. The job opening report edly was at the Social Secur ity district office in the Hill Arcade. William Tipsword, district manager and member of EOCO's board of directors, said today the job vacancy has not been filled. He con firmed that Mrs. Hendricks had sent a black girl to the of fice and indicated she had three other girls available for interview. Tipsword said he was re cently notified of the com plaint and indicated he was interviewing all possible can didates. He said he could not believe Mrs. Hendricks had refused to refer an individual to him. Tipsword said the job open ing was formerly held by a Mexican-American girl. He said the job is for a student who needs funds for school. Tipsword said the job prob ably won’t be filled until the first part of October. Mrs. Hendricks, asked about the complaint today, said: “I didn’t know anything about it until I heard it on the radio.” She said she had no further comment. City Manager Thomas Her ring said the girl had ap proached him with her com plaint and that he is investi gating. He said he would not comment until the facts have been obtained. Herring said he was sorry the complaint was brought out at the commission meeting. He indicated the matter should have been kept confidential until it had been investigated and that the investigation may now be hindered. A meeting of Commissioners Vasquez and Claude Pigges and Herring was set for later today to discuss the complaint. Name Officers Commission members elect ed new officers at their meet ing last night. Mrs. Carolyn Golterman is chairman, Claude Pigges, vice chairman and Luke Anderson, secretary. Mrs. Louise Wilder, execu tive director of HRC, told com missioners of a complaint from a man about his neigh bors being irritated by blacks visiting his home. She said neighbors have expressed con cern about black visitors be cause of their children. In vestigation will continue, she added. City Attorney John Hanlon and Public Defender William Henning attended a session with commissioners to discuss communications between the courts, lawyers and defendants in criminal matters. Invited were representatives of the state’s attorney’s of fice, judges, public defenders, the city attorney and the chairman of the Knox County Bar Association.
