However, as the department had actual Information as to the location of the fire they paid no heed to the alarm.Frank Whitman was acting in place of Chief McGaughey last night and Tom Hoskinson was also sleeping at the house. At the first clap of the fire bell they were up and In short order the team was hitched and ready for the run. Frank Coats, who sleeps at the Martin Undertaking parlors only a few doors away, joined them by that time and with Whitman handlthg the reins they tore out. So quick were they out and gone that residents in the other portions of the city who responded as quick as they could throw on their clothes did not even hear them running so far away had they gone. The fire was at the residence of Geo. It was a wild ride with no lights to guide, but the team was sent at full speed with Whitman urging them to their best efforts. The result was the department was there promptly and ready to do some service had it proven necessary. The fire started at the base board in a bed room behind a door on which some clothing was hanging. The family was sleeping up stairs but were awakened by the smoke and immediately gave the alarm. Neighbors responded promptly and as a result the blaze was' extinguished with a few buckets of water.
