By Mary Drennon SASPAMCO — When the arrival of the torch opens the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, Sept. 15, there will be at least one local family glued to the television — and a “Ti ger’ watching down from heaven. That’s because one woman with legal roots will be running 6.2 miles, biking 24.8 miles, and swimming nine-tenths of a mile for the U.S. team in the debuting Olympic triathlon. Jennifer Ann Gutierrez, the first American to qualify for the Olympics in the triathlon, will have the rapt attention of her grandmother, aunt, and uncle in Saspamco, a residential area named after an old factory lo cated in northwestern Wilson County. And you can bet her father, Johnny “Tiger” Gutierrez, is watching on heaven’s television, rooting for the girl he urged to go all the way. Molly, Gloria, and Raymond Gutierrez, grandmother, aunt and uncle respectively, all agree Jennifer has the stuff to become an Olympic champion. And they also agree it’s Jennifer’s Heavenly inspiration “We know Johnny is urging her SEE Olympics, p. 31 Jennifer Ann Gutierrez with her late father, Johnny “Tiger”?
