STUDENTS TO VISIT PILBARAStudents and potential students of the Western Australian Institute of Technology and Murdoch University, will have the opportunity of discussing their studies with staff when they visit the Pilbara, during the week of September 17-24.Mr. Patrick Guiton of the External Studies Unit at Murdoch University and Mr. George Idle, Head of the Department of External Studies atW.A. I. T. will visit towns with the Pilbara Co-ordinator (Rev.) Ian Svenson as follows:Paraburdoo: Monday September 17; Tom Price: Tuesday September 18;Newman: Wednesday September 19;Port Hedland: Thursday September 20 and Karratha: Friday September 21.Meetings will be held in Tom Price, Newman and Hedland at the local high school at 8pm and in Karratha at the A.I.M. Phone 85 1057.RADARSPEEDCHECKSAs a service to the general public, the Karratha and Dampier Apex and Lions Clubs will conduct a radar speedometer check for cars on Sunday September 23.The tests will be carried out by the Karratha Traffic Office on the main road in the Karratha L.l.A. from 1pm until 5pm.Anyone interested in checking the accuracy of their speedometer is invited to attend the check area.A smaller version of Olivia Newton John paraded attracting a lot of attention.Olivia in fact was Krishna Janotka who along with some 200 other children at the school dressed up as a favourite character for a Pedlar's Parade.The children in their fancy outfits paraded and sold a variety of wares appropriate with their characterisations to raise money for the P and C.Their efforts were well rewarded as some $450 was raised to assist with construction of the proposed new music room to be built at the school.The original idea for a Pedlar's Parade stemmed from the staff. The children quickly took up the challenge of the event and parents and children set to, to produce a wide variety of excellent costumes.^Th^bes^lressed^nc^mos^nQina^jostumesaround the Dampier Primary School on Friday, August 24were judged by Dr. Bartram and the new Dampier Pharmacist. Sue Craig.Their task was unenviable,as they found the task a difficult one. Both said they were impressed with the amount of work that had gone into the costume design.The children were judged in three sections, the winners were in year 1 to 3: Krishna Janotka -Olivia Newton John and Craig Parks ■ Barrow Boy. years 4 and 5 - Lynda Corti - Book worn-, and David Wilkes - candy man and senior - Elizabeth Moore - milkmaid and Jodie Milton ■ martian.When school re-opens an award will also be made for the child raising the most money.ANNA WINS ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP TOPS MONTH OF ACHIEVEMENTAnna Forrest of Dampier will remember August 1979 for a long while to come, for it was during that month that she both won the FeNaCl Queen title and was informed that she had been selected as a Rotary exchange student to go to the U.S.A.Anna, a student at the Karratha Senior High School, will set out for Pennsylvania in the U.S.A. on January 6 fora 12 month stay.She will spendAnna pictured with Cyril Klelnlg, District Governor of the Rotary Club, time with Anna was se- join students fromherseveral families before finally returning to Australia.was selected to represent the Pilbara after going to Perth toother coun try and metropolitan areas for in terviews.DAMPIER GEARS FOR TIDY TOWNPreparations for the Tidy Town Contest are in the final stages with residents, clubs, organisations, businesses responding well and this year's Tidy Town Committee is confident that the town will do well.Judges will award marks for. private gardens.business/industrial gardens, community facilities, methods used to involve community in Tidy Towns effort by Tidy Town Committee, effort/activities by school, conditon of approach roads, general town tidiness, clubs, organisation involvement and duration of activitiesMarks will be lost for littered areas, old vehicles or abandoned machinery in view, weeds, grass growing over kerbing into gutters, fences falling down, broken signs or trees, untidy business premises in public view, litter in lanes, streets etc and rubbish bins out front.Judges will ask towns people several questions at random concerning publicity of the coniest and their involvement.Last year Dampier finished in 6th place overall with 82 points out of 100 and tied for 1st place as the Most Active Group, with three times State winners, Albany.The Dampier Primary School were outright winners as the Most Active School.The Tidy Town Lottery No. 6 was drawn on Fri-day August 31 at the Dampier Primary by Mrs. I.Forrest.The winners of the final lottery for Residential Gardens were: Mr. and Mrs. 0. Roberts. 61 Gascoyne Cres.; Mr. and Mrs. G. Ingram, 152 Giles Cres.and Mr. and Mrs. D. Dent, 158 Burke Cres.The Tidy Town Judging will take place on September 24. For the last competiton before judging, the Dampier commities will stage one further ‘View from the Road’ draw on Friday September 14.This will feature all the blocks of flats and the residents within the block best featuring tidy lawns, trim shrubberies and junkless yards and surrounds will each receive a small prize.A joint effort among flat dwellers will ensure their blocks also represent Dampier well in the final judging shortly afterwards.To maintain the Tidy Town interest amongst residents for the final fortnight, a special 'Letterbox' edition of the five house numbers will be offered.If your house number is drawn and your letterbox is upright, colourful, original and painted you could win a prize.
