Here’s the Story of the jL Cherry Hill Golf Club(Being the Fir*t of a Serie* of Articles Concerning Nearby Golf Clubs)Cherry Hill Golf Club is at present the major activity of Flossmoor Lodge, Inc. Flossmoor Lodge was organized in 1927 to construct a golf course and modern health resort. It purchased 116 acres of land, three-quarters of a mile west of the Illinois Central station at Flossmoor, 111. In the fall of 1927 the contract for the construction of the course was let to Harry J. Collis and work was started immediately.Mr. Collis js a noted golf architect and for twenty years was superintendent of the Flossmoor Country Club. Mr. Collis owns the Flossmoor Nurseries located at Illinois road and Crawford avenue, Flossmoor. He has constructed many of the noted courses in the Chicago district and many throughout the United States. After the underground work was installed the greens were planted with Stolon. Some growth was obtained in 1928, and the greens and course went into the winter season in excellent condition. Temporary greens were played on from May 1st to July 1st of 1929, and the course opened on the regular greens on July 1, 1929.Difficult Course Players who have experienced other courses state that the greens and turf of Cherry Hill Club will make it famous. The contour of the fairways and the two lake holes are especially interesting, and lend an added difficulty to the course. The many sand traps, some of which are yawning abysses, are placed to snare the ball that is hit off the line. \A day spent at Cherry Hill will repay the golfer many times. Arriving at the spacious parking grounds his car is carefully attended. Registration is made at either the professional’s quarters or at the shelter close to the first tee. There he obtains his registration ticket and is given his starting time. If he has a few moments to spare, a beautiful 18-hole putting .green attracts his attention close by. There he can practice his difficult up-hill or downhill put.Every conceivable arrangement is available for his practicing. Or if he cares to try a few practice drives or irons a driviing practice fairway is a short distance away. His number being called he steps to a perfect grass tee and is on his way. At the 6th, 10th, 12th and 13th tees he may quench his thirst or munch a bite of candy. After completing his 18 moles a handsome marble shower booth awaits him to complete a perfect day. Lockers, large and convenient, care for his valuables and the 19th hole isocmplete in its provisions.Grille ServiceStepping up to Cherry Hill Grille a special golfer’s lunch or dinner iserved. If the evening twilight is ap-iroaching one may lounge on the spa-ious porch and watch the setting sun. here, .a scene is available only on the lighest point in Cook county stretches iefore him. Or, if the day be cold and lamp, a wood burning fireplacerackles and glows. Probably a game if bridge with three comparfions is in-■iting, and before he wanders on his cay home golfing yarns are exchanged. )r, probably bachelor days or bach-dorhood is his fate and if so a room iwaits him in the bachelor quarters, arge and airy, overlooking the course. These beautifully furnished rooms are iffered at moderate prices. No golfing public has ever been afforded such golfers’ ideal surroundings. \ day, a week-end, a week, a month— Therry Hill is yours upon request.th
