Patrick’s Lump. The W. C. T. U. of the Ninth Indiana Congressional District remember, with justifiable pride, the reformation of Patrick Bailey, of Colfax. Four years ago Patrick was a wreck from drink. At a convention of this band of workers the old man heard the gospel of temperance, and signed the pledge, which he has most faithfully kept ever since. A clear face, steady step, well dressed body, and good credit have been his sure reward.Patrick recently met a friend who had been deeply interested in his reformation, and to the inquiry “How goes it with you, Patrick, these days?” the old man replied: “I am afflicted with a lump in my side; I must take to drink if I get rid of it.”The friend remonstrated again, and again, only to be met with Patrick’s reply, “J know what I am talking about; nothing but drink will take this lump away,” placing his hand upon his side. The friend was about turning sorrow fully away, when Patrick reached down info his side pocket and drew therefrom the lump, which proved to be several gold coins tied up in a handkerchief. “I tell you,” said Patrick, “nothing but drink will take it away. I have tried it before.”A hearty laugh, and a “God speed you,Patrick,” separated the friends, but the joke has a practical and most pointed lesson. Let “Patrick’s Lump” be his temperance sermon, that others may learn to stop before beginning the habit of drink.
