Norwalk Hospital Offers Child Safety WorkshopAccording to the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly 3(H) children under age 4 die every month in the United States because of accidents |i most of which could have been prevented.The Norwalk Hospital Department of Pediatrics offers an ongoing program. “Child Safety and Accident Prevention Workshop. to educate new parents, grandparents and other caregivers on child safety in the home.The program is intended to reduce the number of children who require treatment in the hospital's emergency room. The next session will be held Oct. 15 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.. in the Tracey 4 Conference Room, at the hospital.“Our emergency department and pediatric unit treat many children who have suffered from choking on objects that they have placed in their mouths, or from poisoning, burns and falls, which could have been prevented.” says John R McNamara. M l)., chairman of Norwalk Hospital Department of Pediatrics. “Our child life coordinator and two pediatric nurses have designed a program that offers information on safety measures that could result in the prevention of accidents and the saving of young lives.” he says.The workshop covers safety training and basic first aid instruction. Participants learn about the most common household accidents involving children, newborn to age five. The workshop also features a safety video developed by Norwalk Hospital.The program demonstrates home safety products, such as cabinet latches and safety plugs for outlets, and each participant receives a customized first aid kit. developed by the department of pediatrics, along with informational material.The workshop was developed by Susan P. Menelly, Certified Child Life Specialist. JillImmermann. Registered Nurse Certified, and Lisa Farkas, Registered Nurse, who also run the program.Ms. Menelly has certification in child life and early childhood education. She is coordinator of the pediatric department's Child Life Program, which she helped institute in 19X7.Ms. Immermann, a registered nurse with nearly 20 years experience, has worked in the newborn, neonatal intensive care and pediatric and pediatric special care units. A member of the hospital’s pediatric staff, she is also an at home private duty nurse.Ms. Farkas. a pediatric nurse at Norwalk Hospital since 1975 and a private duty nurse, has additional training in maternal/newborn care, neonatal intensive care and pediatric special care.
