WEOL adds overnight shiftSteve BrownThe Chronicle-TelegramOvernight radio listeners have had their prayers answered — WEOL 930-AM will once again have art overnight program with a live on-air personality.Effective today, Wally Mmtus will be manning the graveyard shift from midnight to 5 a.m.“We listened to our public and they liked having someone overnight,” said program director Mike Whitmore. “Wally was a longtime overnight announcer and also doubles as our sports director. “He loves doing the overnight work. Wally will sit and talk to folks.”Whitmore said the station had been using satellite programming for the late shift but ‘the audience didn’t care for it.”“Time was right for a change,” said Whitmore.Besides the overnight shift, Whitmore added that the day staff was being revised.Mite Whitmore“Wally will be on from midnight-5 a.m. and I will be on from 5-10 said Whitmore, who is known as Mike James in his on-air capacity. “Bruce Van Dyke is being moved off the afternoons and will be on air from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. He’ll also double as our public service director, doing public affairs stuff for both WEOL and WNWV (WEOL’s EM sister station).“Tom Collins, who has been working part-time for us, will now handle the afternoon shift from 3-7 p.m. In addition, he’ll be doing a lot of production work and commercials for us.“And the evenings will be filled by our sports coverage, both high school and professional. We have several part-time folks that help us out with that.”WEOL broadcasts of high school football and basketball are popular with area listeners.“We’re heading into our most listened to time of the year — fall and winter,” said Whitmore. “People tune in for the weather and sports.”
