LOS ANGELES (UPI) — The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing a deal to acquire former Golden State Warrior forward Cazzie Russell, team lawyer Alan Rothenberg said yesterday. “We're right down to the wire with Cazzie, ’ said Rothenberg. Russell became a free agent Sunday and is free to deal with any team. Rothenberg said the Lakers are attempting to ‘‘work out compensation for the War riors’’ to complete the deal. “It’s obvious that we'd like to have Cazzie, ’said Laker Coach Bill Sharman. ‘I've been hop ing all summer that he'd play for us, although I haven't talked to him.” The 30-year-old Russell, a former All-America at Michi gan, was a 46 percent shooter for the Warriors last year. He has averaged 15 points a game in his eight-year National Bas ketball Association career. The Lakers have five for wards — Happy Hairston, Con nie Hawkins, Bill Bridges, Stan Love and Kermit Washington. “We didn't get that much scoring from our forwards last season,’’ Sharman said, ‘‘and that put more pressure on the guards. Cazzie’s presence would take up some of the slack.
