8C Port Arthur NewsSunday, September 4, 1983KOLE goes in new directionListeners of KOLE-AM will be startled when they tune in to their favorite station Monday morning. Rick Welch, the station’s general manager, hopes they will be pleasantly surprised.Because on Monday morning, KOLE listeners will be greeted by two old friends: the voice of George Ferris, and good old live radio. For more than six months, KOLE’s programming has originated from Chicago and has been beamed here by satellite. Welch plans to stay with “thejltsh” for most of the broadcast day, but Ferris will be live and on the air from 6 until 10 a.m. every weekday. This is more than just an experiment by Welch, who helped turn around the fortunes of KZOM-FM (KOLE’s sister station) earlier this year. Welch works for Gulf Center Broadcasting, which bought the two stations in November of last year.“We want to bring KOLE, the way people remember it, back to Port Arthur,” says Welch. “We’re starting out slowly because listener response is going to be very important to us.”DennyAngelleWednesdays and Sundays In the Port Arthur News. Denny Angelle is entertainment editor of the Port Arthur New s.to the “new”Ferris want to see how people react KOLE. “We’ve got to have support from the community to make this work,” says Welch. “Frankly, community support means not only listener support but support from advertisers, too. But if the response is good, we plan to grow by leaps and bounds.”Already the leaping has started — Welch and Ferris also have in the works a Sunday “oldies” show, to be broadcast from 8 a.m. until noon beginning a week from today. The oldies will span a curious time frame: 1955 to 1963.“Elvis first began to hit in 1955,” says Ferris. “And the Beatles broke into this country by 1963. So what we’ll do is present some of the pre-Beatles hits that aren’t heard all that often.”This will all be pointed in one general direction, Welch says. We want to build up Port Arthur. Every radio station around is trying to be the ‘Triangle’s’ station. But we’re going to concentrate on Port Arthur — Port Arthur news, happenings and activities. We won’t forget about the rest of the area and the world, but the emphasis will be here, in this town.”The other prong of the “new” KOLE will be live broadcasts of Thomas Jefferson High School football games. The games are normally on Friday night (at 7:30 or 8 p.m., depending on the site) and will serve to enhance the “local” emphasis.“What we want is for people to give us a listen, then respond. We want that most of all — we want to hear from those people who listened to KOLE back in the 1960s, and we want to hear from those who feel they have no other alternatives but country and RB radio,” says Welch.Denny Angelle keeps up with entertainment newsKODAK VR FILM 30% OFIThis is a film sale you just can t afford to pass up whethei the Labor Day weekend, or planning a fall vacation Stop by your store and stock up on film for the fall Don’t forget to pick uf camera and flash — check out our selection of filters, carbags tooThis is a great time to stock up on film even if you’re notONE HOUR PHOTO FINISHPA \PROCESSING PRirC-41 FILM ONLYTLIIC rnilDAM CVDIDCC CCD1
