Bert D. Hammond In New Position At ClaremontCLAREMONT- Appointment of Bert D. Hammond to the new position of Assistant Director of Admissions and Community Relations of The Claremont Colleges* Center for Educational Opportunity has been announced by Dr, Mark H. Curtis, president of Scripps College, who also is serving as provost of The Claremont Colleges during the coming year.Hammond's responsibilities will include that of admissions consultant to the five undergraduate colleges, the graduate school, and the special educational programs of the Center. He will inform schools andconnmuntty agencies throughout the area of the admissions possibilities at the colleges and programs of the Center, and will solicit applications for admission, especially from appropriate members of minority groups and poverty- level communities.Until his new appointment, Hammond, a Claremont resident, has for the past year been directing Project Open Future, a program to assist school children from ni~ school children from minority groups in planning for college admission, in his new position, he will be working under the direction of the ReverendE.C. Reckard, Director of the Center for Educational Opportunity as well as Chaplain of The Claremont Colleges.Hammond , a former resident of Oxnard where he was a member of the high school faculty, is agraduate of Central High School in Cleveland. He received a bachelor of science degree tromOhio State University and a master of education degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, New . York. He is a veteran of World War II, entering the service as a private and being discharged as a captain.While in the Oxnard area, he was chairman ofthe city's Community Relations Commission and a member of the Ventura County National Association for the Advancementof Colored People, Since coming to Claremont, he has been a board member of the Claremont In-tercultural Council.Hammond Is marriedand the father of five children. His wife, Mildred, is a graduate of Antioch College, YellowSprings, Ohio,More than 60 per cent of the doctors and 70 per cent of the dentists on active military duty are members of the Army Reserve.
