Band Concert and Aquatic Program Attracted Large Crowd Thursday. Sanduskians turned out in large numbers Thursday night for the un official dedication of East Battery park. A band concert and beating and swimming races were held. It was the first visit to the park for many persons and all were loud in their praise of the accomplishments already made. The park, destined within the near future, to be the city’s leading recre ation spot, has undergone a great transformation during recent months under the direction of City Manager Sadler, who, more than any other person, is responsible for the results already obtained. Sadler has person ally supervised the work, much of which yet remains to be done be fore the entire program under con sideration is completed. The concert was given by Ack ley’s band which was seated on deck which extends out into the bay. Weather conditions were ideal for the concert and celebration and the singing of Miss Margaret Kelly was one of the outstanding features. Miss Kelly has a powerful voice which was heard to good advantage. Roy Wright, local youth, won first honors in the swimming and diving contests while Charles Streckle was second. Edward Piper and Oliver Mone won first and second honors in the junior contests, .The lagoon in the park was a very popular place and numerous small boats manned by youthful rowing enthusasts, made a pretty appearance darting back and forth over the smooth wa ters. The boats were appropriately decorated with paper lanterns of various colors. Temporary lights were placed about the park for the occasion as the permanent lighting fixtures have not been installed. Powder torches were also used in profusion, having been placed at intervals on the docks and about the walks. In view of the fact that the affair proved so successful and attracted such a large crowd, it is probable that further activities will be held there in the near future.
