Early Frost Touches Rosebud Valley. The weatherman had warned of possible frost and so residents of the Rosebud valley were not surprised when the temprature dipped below the freezing point on August 19th. The damage seemed to stay in the valley and low lying areas with gardeners reporting corn, and vines as the most obviously hit. Rosebud is being noticed, especially as you drive along the No. 9 highway. A new sign has been erected by the government proclaiming Rosebud as the site of the Centenial Museum, the Akokiniskway Art Gallery, and the Rosebud Historical Dinner Theatre. The Dinner Theatre crew are taking a 3 week break and will resume production again on the 19th of September for 3 consecutive Friday and Saturday evenings. August 28th is the date set for the group from ‘Farming for the Future’ to tour the annual forage crop plots. Bill Noy has some of these experimental plots on his land. You may contact him for the results of these tests and in the future perhaps the original tour with the group if you are interested in this type of foraging. Tex, Jean and Chandre Leach along with Diane and Marvin McEtheron and family, send out birthday congratulations and best wishes to their grandmother, Mrs. Josephine Bestul, long time resident of the Rosebud Standard area. ‘Honey” as she is known, is celebrating her 91st birthday this month — in Portland,Oregon, with her daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Leach and Mrs. Andrea Glen. They had cake and all the trimmings. Pete and Mabel Negrave, recent visitors to the Honey House used to live on the Owen Gilbert place (east of Heberlings.)They later moved to the Kettenbach farm, leaving the area in the mid thirties. Pete and Mabel now reside in Calgary and will see their former neighbors at the next homecoming. Susan and Paul Neilson were recent visitors to Rosebud. They were guests of Albert and Joan Clark. Eighth District Home Economists toured the Liver Thimble Workshop and Rosebud Honey on the 26th of August. Visiting with Julia Legg is her friend Helen Beaton from Calgary. Helen will spend 2 weeks here. Jean Kirby reports a lovely holiday in B.C. Her sister and brother from Sask. joined her there. They toured Expo, saw the Butchart Gardens and the beautiful city of Victoria. They also visited some relatives in Coquitlam and Bellingham Washington. Local visitors to Camp Chestermere Teen Camp were Jason Melville and Onawa Snyder. Nathan and Wyckley Snyder attended a one week hockey school in Drumheller, coaching the boys were Randy Muller from the Quebec Nordiques and Mike Muller from the Edmonton Oilers. Best wishes go out to Rial and Shirley Barr who are convalescing after a single vehicle motor accident in Rosebud. . Margaret and Mervin Wilson have returned from holidays to the West Coast. They spent a couple of days at Expo while in the area. Hans and Alice Anderson, Vincent and Eva along with Tim and Karla Erickson, Jill, Mathew and Mark all went to Cypress Hills for a break in the summer routine. Meta Neilson, Alice's mother is visiting for a few days at the Anderson home. Don and Linde Turner enjoyed a holiday at Wasa Lake, the also attended a Sanderson family reunion in Calgary on Aug 23rd. Linde’s father is related to the Sandersons. A group of seniors traveled by bus to Southern Alberta, this was sponsored by the Rockyford Friendship Centre. Those attending from the Rosebud area were Mildred Heberling, Luella Kenney, and Ron and Olive Kenny. They toured Waterton, Cypress Hills, Maple Creek, Writing-on-Stone National Park and Fort Walsh. After talking to a few of these people I must conclude it was a very successful, interesting and enjoyable trip. Leon and Vickey Wendt from Edmonton visited with Leon's sister Luella Kenny.
