THURSDAY MORNING. SEPT. 3, 1857, DEMOCRATIC COUNTY CONVENTION. Pursuant to notice the delegates of the several townships of Clermont county met in Convention in the Court-house at Batavia, on the 27th inst. On motion, N. M. Preble was elected President, and P. S. Jones Secretary, and Dr. M. L. Day Assistant Secretary. On motion of B. Brown a committee of three was appointed on credentials, Benj. Brown, N. B. Nichols and T. B. Young said committee. On motion of C. M. Smith, a commit tee of three was appointed to arrange the order of balloting for candidates for the several offices. N. B. Nichols, Allen T. Cowen and T. W. Abernathy said com mittee. On motion of P. S. Jones, the Conven tion took a recess till 1 o'clock, 1 o’clock, P.M. Convention met, N. M. Preble in the chair. On motion of C. M. Smith, each can didate, before being considered nomina ted by this Convention, shall receive a majority of all the votes given. On motion of B. Brown, the vote be by ballot. On motion of C. M. Smith, the candi date receiving the lowest number of votes shall be dropped. On motion of C. M. Smith, all the candidates pledge themselves to support the nominees of this Convention. Lost. Grif fith was nominated by acclamation by the Convention. Probate Judge being next in order, Da vid Kirgan and Samuel F. Dowdney were nominated to the Convention. Samuel F. Dowdney. David Kirgan. Whereupon Samuel F. Dowdney, of Franklin township, was declared the nominee of the Convention for Probate Judge. For Prosecuting Attorney, Peter EH .Hastings and Charles H. For Commissioner, Peter Buntin, Wm. ‘Shaw and Benjamin Tatman were nom inated to the Convention. First ballot: Peter Buntin, William Shaw. .. Benjamin Tatman. Mott Titus........ Elisha J. Emery was declared nomin ated by the Convention. Joshua Sims, of Ohio township, was nominated by acclamation for Coroner. On motion of ©. M. Smith the Conven tion ratified all the nominations just made by a unanimous vote. It being announced that Judge Payne, the Democratic candidate for Governor, was in town, on motion of William Howard, a committee of three was ap pointed to wait upon him and invite him to address the Convention. While the committee was absent, Mr. William A. Collins was called upon, came forward and entertained the Con vention for a short time in an eloquent and happy manner. Judge Payne was introduced to the Convention by the chairman, when he addressed the audience in an able and eloquent manner for near an hour, after which the Convention adjourned sine die. N. M.
