in the western country, to attend to the |service of the Commissioners, and very doubtful whether any could be procured lt;from the eastern states—therefore he it resolved, that James Noble, John Test, James B. Ray, Esq’s, be requested to address the War Department, for the purpose of procuring for this Board, the assistance of an Engineer, from the Board of Engineers iti the pay of the Government of the United States.And as, in the opinion of (his Meeting, it would he improper to omit any means likely to effect the objects for which this Board was constituted—and believing it important that a Board of Engineers, formed of the citizens of our own state, and attached by their interests to it, would be a most valuable acquisition, not only in facilitating the business now in hand, but also by enabling the state government to have al- I ways at command, a body of men, capable, , by their information and experience, to i take charge of those extensive improvements of winch our state is capable, and to which it is hoped the attention of the Government will shortly he directed—Resolved, therefore, that this Board employ one or more persons, to proceed to Ohio, to examine the works now going on there, and obtain such information and experience as may render them competent to locate, survey and estimate the expense of the canal ■ow in contemplation,Rosolved, also, that John Templeton George H. Dunn be appointed a committee to express the thanks ot this meeting to Capt. Thomas Porter, for his offer to sui-vey the aforesaid canal route, and to employ him and Mr. Thomas Brown, in that service, with such compensation as they may be disposed to accept, not to exceed the sum of one dollar per day, and to request them to proceed immediately to the Dayton canal line for the purpose of acquiring the necessary in format ion—to keep an exact account of their necessary expe nses while in that service, the same to be defrayed out of funds subscribed to the canal.Ri solved, that from the best infoima-(ion in the power of this Meeting to obtain, it will require about the sum of .HlOOO to explore, survt-y, locate and estimate the expense of a canal from Lawrenceburgh to Furl Wayne—and that tin* following rate would be a fair distribution of those expenses among the several counties to be bem-fited by the work, according to their capital and population—and the different Commissioners and Delegates are respectfully requested to collect these funds as soon as flt;*ss|b|« —viz. Part of that brigade of government engineers which has been engaged in surveying the route for a canal on the dividing ridge between the waters which flow I'ast into the Potomac,and those that flow west into the Ohio, at Pittsburgh, arrived at this place (Warren) on the 27th inst. They have made their encampment near the Champion swamp, the summit level between the Ohio and the Lake, about four miles from this place. We understand their instructions are to survey, from this level, several lines: one line to run down the Mahoning to the Ohio, at the mouth of Big Beaver; one to Silver creek, following the same to its source, thence to the Cuyahogn, at the rapids in Hiram; one down the Grand river to Austinburgh, thence to the lake atAshtabula; one other passing through theswamp in Bloomfield—and from the Bloom-fit-Id swamp to the Connealt lake, to ascertain the practicability of bringing the waters of that lake on the Champion summit.Some of these routes are to be surveyed with so much exactness as to locate a canal upon without any subsequent surveys.—
