WOMAN FLIER PERFORMS REAL FEATS OF DARINGNew York Tribune; Pitch darkness had enveloped the huge speedway at Skeepshead Bay last night before Katherine Stinson, the young Queen of Speed, ordered her mechanics to cranlc the propeller on her traction biplane.•' With a whirring roar she shot from the planks 3,000 feet up toward the clouds to prove that a woman can keep her word. Miss Stinson had promised to make a flight in the afternoon. Her machine did not Arrive on time. I.Brooklyn Eagle; Daria Resta, driving the blue Peugeot, broke a track record and established another yesterday afternoon in the inauguration of the 191G season, „at the Sheepshead Bay Speedway. In addition to Resta’s fast driving, another car,did the two-mile lap In less than the former record, which was established by Resta himself during the races last season. Chief Engineer Vincent of the Packard Company drove a Packard, to which was fitted an aeroplane motor, around the two-lap at a speed of 110 miles an hour. Vincent, altogether,, went six lap3, and did each one better than 105 per hour. The old record for one lap of the track, two miles,-was 1:08, held by Resta. Yesterday afternoon the champion circled the saucer, in 1:00, or two seconds better than, the old time.- Mr. ’ Vincent announced time for a lap was 1:07 4-5, or . one-fifth of a second better than the former record.That was but one section of the program. The other section left them .undecided as to whether or not an aeroplane is any faster than an auto-mobile—at least when the latter is on a good track. In. the race between Resta and Miss Katherine Stinson, the young girl won by inches, it seemed, although it is probable that the actual distance between the -motors was many feet. In the race between Resta and Peck Newman, an aviator of Hempstead, L. I., Resta won with ease, In 1:55 for the two laps. Miss Stinson will appear alone in the Earth and Air Speed carnival, in which she is to race Daria;Resta at the wheel of his Peugeot, racer. The record for the speedway course, now held by Reata, is expsclcd to be lowered.Miss Stinson is twenty years old, weighs 104 pounds and is five feet four inches tall. The Gnome motor in the machine which she flew yesterday was taken from the wreckage of the 'plane in which Lincoln Beachy lost his life.It was announced last night that the accident to Thompson would in no way Interfere with, the Aero Club of America's aeroplane benefit fund program which has been arranged for tomorrow and Sunday. Miss Stinson has volunteered to perform all the aerial st.unts promised by her tutor.Miss Katherine Stinson, it Was learned today, is the first United States aerial mail carrier. She is a _ resident of San Antonio, Texas, and j it was there she learned to fly. It must be said that she learned thoroughly. She looped the loop, flew upside down, right side up, sideways and a number of other methods used in the best.aviation circles. She also dropped a few bombs, juat to s^ow how it could'be done. Miss Stinson is an astonishing young woman. She caused considerable comment when she posed with Resta, due to her girlishness, but most of the spectators thought that she would don leather trousers or a jumper. Notfor the little Texan, though.
