Denver Public Library, Western History Department. TUTT AND PENROSE CABIN, FEBRUARY 1894 Cripple Creek attracted her share of young men from prominent eastern families, who laid the foundations of future for tunes in the gold camp. Bert and Leslie Carlton, Henry M. Blackmer, Harry Leonard, Charles MacNeill and Charles Tutt arrived in the camp’s early days and made the most of opportunities in mining, refining, transportation and real estate. Best known to Coloradans today is Spencer Penrose, who joined Tutt in 1892. Their real estate firm and C.C.D. mine were stepping-stones in amassing a fortune that later financed the Broadmoor Hotel and fueled the El Pomar Foundation. The handsome “‘Spec”’ (on rt.) shared this cabin on Prospect St. with Harry Leonard at left.
