I take strong exception to the recent editorial support that urged increased funding for the Syracuse Symphony Or chestra The symphony is asking the county for $500,000 a year for the next three years. That’s one and one-half million dollars. They are receiving $160,000 from the county for this budget year. Like everyone else, the symphony is going through a rough time. The sym phony can not seem to balance its bud get, be fair to its employees and main tain major symphony status all at once. Hence the request for the county bail out. Just in case nobody really noticed it, Onondaga County is having a bit of a rough time all its own. The county has seen deficit budgets, a downgrading of our credit rating, and the probability of a large tax increase and possibly even lay offs for 1983. Increased money for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra is money that the county doesn’t have. The problem of a symphony bail-out by the county is more troubling on an other level. What is the role of govern ment? Are there logical limits to govern mental intrusion, or is government meant to be something for everyone, a program for every purpose? It is not the role of county government to be Big Brother, the benefactor of every well-intentioned community ac tivity that is immersed in financial diffi culty .I don't think the citizens of this county will forgive or forget proponents of this bail-out if they manage to raise taxes, lay off workers and give the symphony more money in the same year.
