The Rumsey Garden Club Flower, Vegetable Baking show took place August 25th. There were 760 entries. Judges were vegetables - Mrs. Edith Clark, Green Gables, Erskine, Mrs. Ken Henderson and Mrs. Freda Ball of Lacombe judging the flowers, accompanied by Abbie McNaughton and Shirley Watson. Norma Dowkes, Home Economist, Drumheller, judged the baking, with Mildred Usher and Marilyn Koplar pinning on the tags and recording the winners. Alma Tolman and Margaret Pennock accompanied Mrs. Edith Clark. Lovely arrangements, beauti ful gladioli, looking to delight the taste of the viewer, comical song title arrangements as well as serious, the children’s sec tion for the Fairy Story theme was good, the Rose section the best in years, as was the Fruit section and the odd growth class brought comments from all ages. Mrs. Martha Lynn donated a direct arrangement for a door prize which was won by Mrs. Hazel Sleen of Calgary and the bud vase with the red rose was won by Joan Michaylow, Olds. Entries came from Morin, Red Deer, Erskine, Big Valley, Trochu, Three Hills, Drumheller Michichi and Rumsey. Visitors came from all these town as well as Calgary, Lacombe, Stettler, Vancouver, South Africa, Mun son, Leeds, England, Rowley, Camrose, Peace River, Shawni gan Lake, B.C. Delta, B.C. Nuneaton, England, Sherwood Park and Olds. Winners of special awards were Children’s Section Clausen’s donation of the plot prizes 6 - 10 - Connie Griffith, Michael Hatt, Vicki Lynn. 11-15 years - Stephen Hatt, Teresa Montgomery, Linda Goddard. The Storch Trophy for the best plot went to Connie Griffith. The Hatt Trophy for the most points in the Junior vegetables and flowers went to Connie. The Martha Lynn Trophy for the best arrangements went to Virki n. The Foester Trophy for the most points in baking for Juniors went to Bonnie Steen. In the adult section the Big Country News Award went to George Deeprose for the best rose. Drumheller Mail award went to Elsie Hart for the best pumpkin Dixon-Reid award went to Helen Steen for the best houseplant. Alberta Nurseries Trophy went to Clara Montgomery for the most points in the cut flower section. Helen Steen Trophy for the most points in the Cake Decorating went to Mary Avramenko. Alberta Wheat Pool, Morrin, gave a trophy for the most points in the baking section, it was won by Helen Steen. Shepherd Trophy for the best grad went to Frank Whittemore, ‘Red Deer. The Royal Bank, Big Valley, awarded a trophy to the person winning the most points in the vegetable section; it was won by the Club President, Elsie Hart. The Morrin Bank of Montreal awarded a Trophy to the person with the most points for the entire show. Last year’s winner being handicapped 35 points. Clara Montgomery, Morrin was the winner. A tremendous amount of effort on the part of the members to produce a Show that will operate efficiently is a great credit to the community. The friendly serv ers of the lunch, the table set-up, the clean-up crew, trophy donors, the people who go to all the effort of brining the entries, the people who bring the lunch, the ones who go with the judges, the ones who serve the judges dinner, and many more jobs not mentioned are all done with humor and zest. The Rumsey Garden will be hosting the 1978 Provincial Show so keep up the good work you garden enthusiasts and congra tulations on this year’s show.
